Congratulations to the Heavy Civil team competitors and their coaches for achieving a 1st-Place win at this year's first-ever Region 7 virtual student competition! This was the teams' 5th podium visit in six years and follows two consecutive 3rd place finishes in a row. Remote coaching, learning, and competing hurdles couldn't stop this team from dominating. We're proud of Jesus Contreras, Carlos Lopez, Jose Fraga, Cody Norene, Jacob Grim, and Randy Pay, the hard-working students who made up this team.
This year's problem consisted of a Caltrans drainage and grading project in Kingvale, CA, which came with hard rock challenges. However, having worked on similar practice problems throughout the year, the team hit the ground running and did a great job solving the problem, then delivering a stellar presentation describing how "to build the work."
SCMEF would also like to give a special shout out to the dedicated coaches, Fred Penman, Western Engineering Contractors, Inc., and Professor Gareth Figgess, CSUS Faculty Coach, who volunteered countless hours of their time to coach these students to a 1st Place win!
